I Kings 1

Chapter 1

It is interesting to ponder the reason for David’s favoring Solomon.  I suspect that it has something to do with Bath-Sheba’s being the boy’s mother.  After the death of their child conceived in adultery, perhaps David made this oath concerning Solomon in an attempt to comfort her.  (On the other hand, see also 2nd Samuel 12:24-25 where Nathan tells David that God favors Solomon.  The actual selection of Solomon, alluded to in 1st Chronicles 28:6, must have come after Solomon grew a little and God was able to see the boy’s faithfulness.  Perhaps it would have been presumptuous of David to make the oath to Bath-Sheba before God selected the heir in this way.)

v. 41:  I think it was characteristic of the cunning Joab, always practical and worldly, that he was the first to notice the commotion.
