I Samuel 15

Chapter 15

v. 11:  I believe Samuel was asking God to have mercy on Saul here because he loved him.  See 16:1.

V. 13:  Saul sounds like a child trying to avoid blame in this whole dialogue.  The fact that he says, “I have carried out the LORD’s instructions,” indicates his anticipation of Saul’s rebuke.  Note too, he blames the soldiers for keeping the livestock, and as secondary insurance against blame for himself, he claims that those animals were to be sacrificed to the LORD.  Of course, he was in no hurry to accomplish this even if it was true since he made time to stop and build a monument to himself beforehand.
