Larry Hunt's Bible Commentary

SWEET RIVER FOOL - Alcoholic, homeless, and alone, Snody despaired of life until a seemingly chance encounter with Saint Francis of Assisi led him to the joys of Christ and the redemption of his soul…

  • THE GLORY OF KINGS - A proposal for why God will always be the best explanation for the existence of the universe.

  • ENOCH WALKED WITH GOD - Enoch had a beautiful soul and walked with God in many ways. This book invites children to imagine what some of those ways might have been while presenting them with a wonderful model for their own lives.

I Samuel 22

Chapter 22

v. 6:  I wonder if the phrase, “spear in hand,” is inserted here to allude to the occasions in which Saul has hurled his spear at people thought to be in his close confidence (i.e., David and Jonathan).  I think the author uses it to demonstrate the nervous tension present in Saul’s court, tension that stemmed from the very real possibility that Saul might hurl his spear at any time at any person stranding around him.

v. 19:  It is tragically ironic that here Saul carries out the complete annihilation of the city (by means of Doeg).  Compare this with his behavior in 15:9.
