II Samuel 23

Chapter 23

v. 13:  I do not know why the “three” here should not be Eleazar, Shammah, and Josheb-Basshebeth.  They were just described in the preceding verses.  Besides, it does not appear to me that Abishai and Beniah belong to a 2nd “triad” as Barnes suggests.

v. 39:  “Thirty-seven in all” means the three named in vs. 8-12, the three of vs. 13-17, the two named in vs. 18-23, plus the twenty-nine here.  At first one might conclude from this that the three of vs. 13-17 were different from those of vs. 8-12, but I do not believe they were because the number of individuals was not actually 37 since all the named ones of vs. 8-23 are repeated in this last list.
